Unresolved Issues Associated with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Treatment of Chronic Tinnitus

چکیده

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been investigated as a potential treatment for chronic tinnitus 20 years. Numerous studies have reported that repetitive TMS (rTMS) demonstrated efficacy reducing the severity of and its associated co-conditions such depression, anxiety, insomnia. However, some researchers active rTMS is no more effective than sham (placebo) method. There are numerous unresolved issues in this field need to be addressed before can become viable tinnitus. These include type or brand system configuration; coil type, orientation, placement method; scalp neural target; laterality application; dual site vs. single stimulation; frequency intensity; number sessions; pulses per session; determination resting motor threshold (rMT); characteristics study population their tinnitus; outcome measures follow-up assessments. To address resolve these issues, large-scale, multi-site clinical trials conducted determine which protocols most effective. In absence investigations, studied remain continue impede application

Individualized Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Treatment in Chronic Tinnitus?

BACKGROUND Prefrontal and temporo-parietal repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in patients suffering from chronic tinnitus have shown significant but only moderate effectiveness with high interindividual variability in treatment response. This open-label pilot study was designed to examine the general feasibility of an individualized fronto-temporal rTMS protocol and to explore ...

Transcranial magnetic stimulation: potential treatment for tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a common and often severely disabling disorder for which there is no satisfactory treatment. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a new, non-invasive method of modifying the excitability of the cerebral cortex, which has proven effective in auditory hallucinations and other disorders. Some early studies have been published in which TMS has been trialed in the treatment of tinn...

Transcranial magnetic stimulation for tinnitus

Neurology 2012;78:1624–1625 Millions of individuals experience tinnitus, the perception of sound in the absence of auditory stimulation.1 Chronic tinnitus may disrupt sleep and be associated with substantial irritability, depression, and anxiety. Treatment of disabling tinnitus may include the use of sound generators, drugs, and behavioral therapies, but is often unsatisfactory.1,2 Tinnitus is ...

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) inhibits cortical dendrites

One of the leading approaches to non-invasively treat a variety of brain disorders is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). However, despite its clinical prevalence, very little is known about the action of TMS at the cellular level let alone what effect it might have at the subcellular level (e.g. dendrites). Here, we examine the effect of single-pulse TMS on dendritic activity in layer 5 p...
